Right when
I read filmmaker Woody Allen’s quote, “Nature and I are two”, I would have
guessed he grew up in the technology filled world we live in now and not the
1930’s. I think it is a very interesting
point to make that an increase in biophobia is directly related to the increase
in how children grow up with all sorts of technology around them. 40 years ago when my parents grew up in
California, they did not have a television let alone a Xbox or Playstation. They didn’t have a computer to go on to watch
Youtube videos or read about whatever they wanted on Wikipedia. To experience the outside world, you had to
get out of your house and live life.
There was no median like Facebook or Instagram to live it through. In today’s world, people can know exactly
what the weather is outside without ever even getting out of their bed. Because technology is so great now, people do
not bother with the natural world because it is something that they cannot
control. I am definitely one of those
people that would agree with Woody Allen’s quote! I am not the one who wants to go camping or
drive in the country. The one place that
I could not agree more that nature and I ARE NOT one is when I am in the
ocean. I grew up living right across the
street from the ocean, but I am still just as scared every time I go in. There is something about going in water up to
your waist and not being able to see your feet.
When you step into the ocean, you are leaving your human habitat and
entering the home of millions of different sea creatures. Yes, most of these creatures range from crabs
to small fish, but as they always say during Shark Week, “There is always a
shark within 10 feet of you while you are in the ocean. Some people love mother mature and but I am
just not one of those people. I am perfectly
happy playing my video games and watching all of these sea creatures through my
LCD TV. Hey, you can actually see them
when you are watching them on a 50-inch screen.
